Test Accommodation Information for Faculty
As the faculty member, you are responsible for providing assessments for your course. The optimum environment for students taking tests for a course is with the instructor or teaching assistant for that course. However, if you are unable to provide certain accommodations, Testing and Evaluation Services can provide this service.
Important Note: Testing and Evaluation Services will not provide accommodations that are of a time and space nature. Therefore, extended-time testing accommodations will no longer be provided by T&E. This type of accommodation needs to be provided by the instructor.
Here are some reminders when using Testing and Evaluation Services to provide alternative testing service to students in your course.
- This service is for classroom testing only. Comprehensive exams, prelims and other high stakes assessments cannot be scheduled through this service and must be done through the department.
- Allow students the opportunity to meet with you to review their recommended accommodations and to reach agreement on appropriate test accommodations for your course.
- Provide testing accommodations that do not fundamentally alter the nature of your course.
- Maintain a student's confidentiality and avoid singling a student out from the rest of the class.
- Exams need to be scheduled with T&E at least seven days before they need to be given.
- Exams should be sent to T&E, in the proper format, at least 24 hours before they are scheduled to be given.
- The instructor is responsible for providing the test in the proper media, with the exception of brailing. So the instructor must provide a taped version of the exam if that is the appropriate accommodation. For some audio exams, we have computer software that can read electronically provided data in lieu of a taped version of the exam. This software has certain limitations and will not work well for specialized content or mathematics.
- Scribing service is provided by T&E if the exam is an objective exam, such as multiple choice. Scribes are usually not appropriate for subjective exams, such as essays. These types of exams should have responses taped, presented orally or through the use of adaptive software such as Dragon Naturally Speaking.
- If an exam has not been scheduled and approved by the deadline, the student can take them as a walk-in on Wednesday evenings. They will print out a late request form that will require instructor approval.
