Frequently Asked Questions Regarding the UW-College
Foreign Language Placement Testing Policy
1. Are the tests required?
Placement tests are not required but are definitely recommended for anyone planning to continue language study in the Colleges.
2. Are the placement decisions binding?
Placement test scores are not binding, but advisory to the student, advisor, and instructor.
3. Do students receive credit for taking the test?
Students do not receive credit for the placement test, but are eligible for retroactive credits if they receive a B or better in their first college course in the language. The number of retro credits available ranges from 4 to 16 depending upon the level at which the student begins. For more information, contact Student Services on the Colleges campus or the course instructor.
4. What is the policy on AP scores?
The UW Colleges World Languages Department will grant 12 credits, or the equivalent of 101, 105, and 201, to students with grades of 5 on the AP exam; students receiving 4 will receive 8 credits (101 and 105); and students with grades of 3 will receive 4 credits for 101. International Baccalaureate (IB) students with grades of 5, 6, or 7 on the Higher Level exam will receive 12 credits for 101, 105, and 201.
5. If a student took an AP test in French, German or Spanish, should s/he still take the placement test?
AP and IB students who wish to continue their foreign language study in the Colleges should be encouraged to take the placement test. Depending upon their AP or IB scores, they may be eligible for additional retroactive credits should they place higher and receive a B or better in the course.
